Explore the South

If you think Tanzania you most likely think of the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, but Tanzania has much more to offer. The southern parks and reserves are often forgotten but they offer incredible game viewing and a range of safari activities such as boating/walking safaris and fly camping.

This Explore the South itinerary is perfect for adventurers.

We have selected the best accommodations for you and of course we can adjust these to your preferences and budget.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s former capital, her largest city and main port. The distinctly African, colourful markets are well worth a visit and both German and British influences can still be seen in the architecture around the city. Conveniently positioned amidst some of the most important sea routes in the world, the city is the transport and economic hub of the country as well as a centre for arts and culture. It serves as an excellent jumping off point to explore the surrounding area including Pemba, Mbudya, Unguja islands, a variety of national parks and countless pristine beaches. Visitors can look forward to visiting a number of other activities including: learning about Tanzanian culture at the National Museum and House of Culture, visiting the eclectic Oyster Bay, and taking a stroll through the city's lush Botanical Gardens.

Day itinerary

Upon arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport  you will be met by a representative of Takims (our partner and groundhandler in Dar es Salaam) who will bring you to Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel for overnight stay.

Day 2-4: Roho Ya Selous, Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve

The remote and little-visited Selous Game Reserve covers more than 5% of Tanzania’s total area and is the largest of its kind in Africa. At an unbelievable 55,000 sq km it is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the North. The landscape here has remained almost as it was before tourism began and the massive park has only a few accommodation options.

The Great Rufiji River and its tributaries are the lifeblood of the reserve, creating a network of forests and woodlands around the lagoons, sandbanks and lakes with tall palm trees adding to the scenic splendour. Because of its size and remoteness, the reserve has over 2,100 species of plants, 350 species of birds, 60,000 elephant, 108,000 buffalos and an estimated 1,300 of the worlds’ roughly 4,000 remaining rare wild dogs, giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt wilderness. Boating, walking safaris and fly camping are all available in the Selous.

Day Itinerary

After an early breakfast you will be picked up by a representative of Takims who will bring you to Dar es Salaam Domestic Terminal Airport to connect with your domestic scheduled flight to Mbuyu Airstrip in Selous Game Reserve. Upon arrival you will be warmly welcomed by your Asilia driver/guide who will bring you to Roho ya Selous where you will spend 3 nights. Together with the Asilia resident guide you will make a plan how often end when you would like to go on game drives. Game drives are done in open sided 4x4 safari vehicles and you will share the vehicle with other guests who are in camp. It is possible to book your private vehicle at extra costs.

Roho Ya Selous

Set on a hill overlooking the water, Roho ya Selous sits in the very heart of the Selous Game Reserve. Explore this vast wilderness, home to one of Africa’s largest populations of wild dog, with our expert safari guides, by boat, walking safari and game drive. The real magic of the Selous lies in the variety each day on safari brings. Whether you’re exploring on a game drive in search of leopard lurking in the shady boughs of a fig tree, or out on foot tracking wildlife that’s ventured close to camp during the night, this reserve is full of surprises. With just eight canvas tented rooms, each with air-cooling systems over your bed to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep in the hotter months, Roho ya Selous strikes the perfect balance between comfort and adventure.
